Below the belt…

March 31, 2009

So hip-hop fashion has finally taken its toll on the youth of Mooloolaba, although lets face it, these days low slung jeans aren’t even really hip-hop – just ask ‘Yeezy. Trent Wroe, (although unconfirmed as a hip-hop fashionista) copped a $250 fine after ‘accidentally’ dropping his jeans in front of a female police officer.

This post is brought to you courtesy of Tony Tang’s inspired $33 special on Jamesons, and dedicated to the angry “come back here and i’ll give you thanks very much…” lady from the free ride.

Anyway, here’s 5 instrumental tracks to bump when loud noises hurt your brain, and everything is a bit blurry… plus an El-P track that slipped in by accident, but shit, you can never have enough of the Producto.

1. Mass Transit – Capitol D and the Molemen.

2. International Hustler (instrumental) – Connie Price & The Keystones

3. Mu-Getsu – DJ Krush & Toshinori Kondo

4. Cassava: Nokea – DJ/rupture

5. Bring the Ruckus – El Michels Affair

Bonus: Tasmanian Pain Coaster – El-P

Here you go.

Shut up! and while your shuttin up, put a shirt on!

One of my pet hates is when people rap other people’s lyrics, they usually look/sound stupid and forget bits n get all “Nah nah wait its..ah…um?”. Idiots. I’ll make an exception for Mighty Mos, peep the drop via Dallas.

Also expect a review once I’ve had a good listen to the new album. Enjoy ya weekend.

Strive for Grate(ness)…

March 27, 2009

Some very fine grates, see also Manhole Covers and Cheese Graters…

The Grates are a band from Brisbane. They’re cool. I really like the Drones tho, and they are posting (blurry) pics of Liddiard & Co. on stage in NYC. From the pictures on their Tumblr you’d be forgiven for thinking that all the great current Australian rock acts have gone to NYC.

Its a nice move tho, with photos a plenty, and as their Tumblr says:

“What goes on tour, goes online.”

Also, since i’m plugging stuff…

Jeff “Passion of the Weiss” Weiss, goes in deep on SXSW, managing to refrain from the usual “oh my gosh i’m really at SXSW” approach that so many other writers have invariably taken.

Combat Jack is re-upping his fantastic series of “Top 5 Gulliest Moments I Experienced First Hand in the Music Industry” as well as a ridiculously deep piece on none other than Mr Damon Dash.

Finally, Nick at WayCoolJnr has dropped a really interesting piece about the new Nokia “Comes With Music” campaign could well be the future of music sales. (I’ve only recently started checking this spot regularly, its definitely more media/marketing than straight music blog, but highly worth the read.)

Where the Wild Things Are

March 27, 2009

Drab just reminded me about this drop i started a few weeks ago after seeing the poster for Spike Jonez’s re-imagining of my favourite children’s book evar.

The Further Adventures of Von Pea.

March 27, 2009

While I’m on the alt hip-hop tip i should also mention Von Pea, Occasionally its good to hear a backpack rapper that actually makes sense, Von has a flow that leans more to the 90’s era boom bap style and less to the MF DOOM I’m just as confused as you are bag. Released on his birthday back in 08 with production by Mad”work everyday”Lib, its a pretty tight album, funny lyrics good beats and a hilarious skit where he claims other rappers be biting his style.

“I’m watching a Jay-Z concert, and this ni**er jay z come out on stage with a jacket on, I was the first rapper to ever wear a jacket, and ni**ers wanna wear jackets now?”
